What do you see in this picture? If you look long enough you will realize that this picture can be seen in at least two different ways. Maybe you see the black vase in the middle of the picture. Or maybe you see the two faces looking at one another. Both of those realities are in this picture. At different points a person can see either of them.
Last week we began looking at the simple Jesus story we know as the prodigal son. We talked last week about the experience of the younger son being welcomed home by his father after his selfish and sinful behavior. It didn’t matter to the father what his son had done. All the father in our story cared about was that his son was alive. The party that came after that must have been a great joy for the younger son (and for the father).
But, as in the picture above, perspective is everything. This week we will look at the ending of the prodigal son story. There’s another voice that needs to be added to this story, that of the elder brother. What is his experience of the party the father throws for his younger brother? How will he see the turn of events? Will he find joy? In this story, do you see from the perspective of the younger son? Or the elder brother?
Join me Sunday for worship as we explore the perspective and response of the elder brother. As always, the entire worship experience will be on the website for you to engage in with your family. This week we have the children’s choir bringing us two special pieces of music. You won’t want to miss it!
See you on Sunday!
