Weekly Memo - July 1, 2014

7/1/2014

Comments

With July 4th occurring on a Friday this year, I’m going to presume that it’s better to send out this week’s memo today.  There are a few things going on around EPUMC that I want to remind you about.

First, Andrew Hagen our Youth Minister leads about 25 youth and adults who are our Youth Mission Trip to  Navajo Nation, AZ to live and work for a week.  The team leaves from the church at 6:30 P.M. on Saturday.  This pic is our team from a few years ago. Parents and everybody will gather for a very quick send off.  If you’d like to join us in a prayer for safe travel, great times and a blessing to all join us in the parking lot.  And although you may not be a designated “prayer partner” I’d ask that you would remember Andrew and this year’s crew in your prayers.

This Sunday in worship we begin a three-week worship series on Jacob.  Jacob is what you might call my favorite character in all of scripture.  He puts the “fun” in the term “dysfunctional personality,” and yet it is through him that God continues to fulfill God’s promise. I’m continuing to experiment with a bit of a different preaching style where I’m spending more time explaining and teaching the scriptures.

And although it is a week away I want to remind you of a Concert/ Fund Raising Event for the entire EP community we are hosting.  We’re calling it “Music in the Garden.” It’s happening on Thursday July 10th 6:30-8:30 p.m. It’s a benefit concert for PROP by “After 5.”  After 5 is a women’s vocal ensemble, backed by a jazz combo of piano, drums, bass, and trumpet.  After 5 performs jazz, swing and gospel throughout the Twin Cities.  Don tells me they use to practice at our church.

By hosting I mean it will be at our Church on what I like to call our “front yard” if weather cooperates and in the fellowship hall if not.  Hosting for us means that we will be providing food.  It’s hot dogs and chips, but hey that’s picnic food.  Hosting means, I hope, that more than a few of us will show up to make everyone feel comfortable.  Hosting also means that we will share a word from scripture that connects to our community garden. I’m hoping the group has a song we can sing along to and then we’ll have some updates and tours of our community garden.  We might even invite folks to pull a handful of weeds.

This is a great opportunity to invite a friend or neighbor to something at EPUMC.  It’s going to be fun, interesting, and ya gotta eat.  It’s also the beginning of our Mid-Week worship services this summer.  Each Wednesday at 7 we’ll have some music, a word of scripture, prayer and desert.  The Tumbleweed has the schedule.

Now that you know what’s going on at EPUMC; have a great 4th of July weekend.
