Pastor Dan's Weekly Memo - July17

One of the things we do very well at EPUMC is food. This is especially true every Sunday morning when after worship we fortify ourselves for the work of discipleship ahead of us with treats in the fellowship hall. On Sunday, we had these cream cheese bars I really liked. (But then again, there are a lot of treats I really like.) As I went up for seconds I said to the person serving them, “This makes my top ten list of all time favorite treats at fellowship time.”    Pat emailed me the recipe.  I believe it is my Christian duty to share it with you.

 2 pkg Pillsbury crescent rolls

16 oz cream cheese

1 c sugar

1 egg

Spread 1 package of crescent rolls on bottom of a greased cake pan.

Beat together cream cheese, sugar and egg until well blended and put the mixture over the rolls.  Place the other package of crescent rolls on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Frost with a powdered sugar frosting.

You can also put a small package of sliced almonds on top. (I’m also thinking something raspberry in the middle.)

The other side of eating treats at fellowship time is of course bringing and serving them.  We have a great core group of folks who make sure this happens and clean up after all the rest of us each and every week.  We could use a few more in that group.  Don’t worry about having to make cream cheese bars…bring what you like or can bring.  If variety is the spice of life we are a very spicy people.  Hey, we even have a few people who bring fruit, just sayin’.  You can sign up on the sheet in the kitchen, write it down on the registration pad, talk to someone in the kitchen on a Sunday or myself. Fellowship time is important not just for the treats, but for the treat we get of seeing and talking with each other.  I’m not sure what the recipe is for doing fellowship time, but whatever it is we also do it well. It is a delight to see each other in a space that is comfortable, full of good treats and the buzz or vibe that is created in our space.

Can you remember or imagine what it is like for someone new to walk out of worship and decide whether or not to join us?  For us who come to church as much for fellowship time as anything else it’s a “no brainer.” But for someone who doesn’t know what he or she is walking into – even if the treats are outstanding – it can be a bit intimidating.

This great group of folks make it their job on a Sunday morning to be sure these new and newer guests don’t stand by themselves wondering if it’s OK to go up and get a second cream cheese bar.  We could use a few others, when it is needed, to focus on our guests. If someone you’ve not met before sits next to you in worship, inviting them to join you is a good thing. I mean would you have wanted to have anyone miss those cream cheese bars, to say nothing of the other great things we have to share when we are together.
