Pastor Dan's weekly memo for September 4, 2014

It’s going to be a great Sunday at EPUMC!

  • The Chancel Choir will be back.

  • Sunday School will be back.

  • We will have a Rally Sunday Fair where you can find out about the different ministries of our church.

  • There will be lots of different types of food and fun stuff to do during fellowship time.

  • And during worship we will bless backpacks.

Backpacks came along just after I graduated from carrying books around.  A couple of years ago not wanting to go my whole life without ever caring a backpack, I gave up my briefcase for one.

I use my backpack mostly to carry my computer, which is the one thing in this world I do not want to lose or break or somehow otherwise mishandled. I think I’d rather have my car stolen, than have my backpack taken and my guess is a lot of people, especially kids, who carry backpacks feel the same way about their backpacks. What they carry in there: school work, stuff, i-pads and computers, for older the kids cell phones would be very difficult to replace. All that stuff is important, a backpack is something you always have with you and it is very personal. My neighbor kid has an R2D2 backpack that has a button that makes the sound of R2D2. How cool is that?  This Sunday during worship we are going to bless backpacks.

A Blessing that is offered in the Bible is meant to carry with it the power of presence.  It’s not just nice words to remember and inspire you but it’s a part of somebody being shared. When you give a blessing you are asked to reach down deep inside yourself and give a little of something away to another.

On Sunday, when I ask all of you to put your hand towards a child and their backpack, what part of you will you be willing to impart? At this time in their lives these kids have no idea what they need in a larger measure than they possess on their own… We who have been through a bit more of life, however, do know and perhaps are willing to risk some of what is needed.  Is that something; the courage to face the unknown, the patience with friends that goes beyond an offense, the balance between respect for teachers and whatever it is that calls us to question authority.

There is something important to being present for a blessing, because who knows all the different things that will be shared.  And so for those of you who can’t be here we are going to also bless and pass out a reminder of what happens here on Sunday. It’s just a little something you can put on a zipper or inside your backpack.

Rather you have a blessing to impart or a backpack to be blessed, I hope to see you Sunday morning.

Keep the Faith!
Pastor Dan
