Pastor’s Corner

This month we celebrate the 150th anniversary of our church! The detailed scheduled of events and gatherings are outlined on the front page of this Tumbleweed. Sunday November 16 is our festive celebration with one worship service at 10 a.m. Let’s fill the sanctuary to overflowing.

In preparation for this event, I have sent a letter to each church in Eden Prairie, asking each one to hold our church in prayer on November 16 in their worship service that we may continue to serve Christ with boldness and courage in the coming years. God’s grace and guidance have led us in ministry for the past 150 years. In this time of celebration and remembrance let us also put our trust in God’s spirit to lead us forward into the unknown future.

This coming year, the Vision Team will continue to lead us in a process of discernment as we ask God to give us wisdom and vision for the next steps in our ministry. The call to faithfulness will take new expression as we use the gifts God has given each of us to continue building up the church to serve Christ.

This past June, at our Annual Conference gathering, Bishop John Hopkins challenged the United Methodist Churches of Minnesota toward faithful and effective ministry with THE GREAT CHALLENGE! He urged each church to express their ministry of service to Christ in the following ways:

Grow in Christ likeness

Reach the least, the lost and the left out

Expect God to do great things among us

Ask people into a life changing relationship with Jesus Christ

Tell about our changing lives

As we serve Christ and those he came to save we will grow to become a GREAT church. Greatness means living the Christ life and sharing it with all. Let us remain open to Christ’s spirit of grace and boldness as we give thanks for our past and trust God’s guidance for our future. In partnership with Jesus Christ, let us build a ministry that reflects God’s grace and joy in all that we do.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

We are in the middle of our unit on the history of our church and of Eden Prairie. Things are going well—there are lots of great activities going on in each of the stations as well as learning about our past. Check out our “log cabin,” “school,” and Dakota rooms! MANY thanks to Joan Hanson for tirelessly working with me to make this unit come alive!

OFFERING

We ended our unit on offering on October 5, having experienced lots of activities, stories and ways we can give offering. In our art station we completed tying 12 blankets which will be given to Ronald McDonald House. In our kitchen station we baked lots of great goodies which were sold at a bake sale on October 5. Thanks to everyone who purchased these goodies, we netted about $125! This money will go to Simpson Shelter. Connect Club (3-4th graders) made birthday kits which will also be given to Simpson shelter. The lessons of giving, sharing and caring were modeled well by our children. Thank YOU!!!!

Our next offering project is a popular one here. We are again going to have folks fill shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, and candy that will go to Operation Christmas Child. These boxes are distributed around the world to children who would otherwise have no present at all on Christmas.

Please see our display by the coat room and pick up a brochure with directions on how to fill the shoebox.

We need the boxes here at church NO LATER than NOVEMBER 17.

FAMILY ADVENT CELEBRATION !

We have a wonderful, fun evening planned for Sunday, November 30, from 4:30-6:30 P.M. Join us in celebrating the beginning of Advent! The evening will include LOTS of fun crafts, a pizza supper and caroling. Sign up on the poster in the Narthex or call Deb Soderholm, 828-9515.

THANKS !

Thanks to all the great people who have volunteered their time to teach our children this fall. The year has been going great. The addition of shepherds has been a very positive one for everyone. Thanks to those of you who have volunteered for this important role.

NEEDS

We need more teachers for our next unit on Advent. The dates are November 23-December 14 (4 Sundays). Please sign up on Children’s Ministry table by office or call Deb Soderholm, 828-9515.

There is still a need for shepherds—1 more for 2nd grade, 9:00; 2 for 5th grade, 9:00 and 1 more for 3-4th grade, 10:30. PLEASE consider doing this. I have information on the duties and/or talk to someone who is already doing this to get their feedback on the process.

We could use help at the Advent Celebration, too. Call Deb Soderholm, if you can help.
